Current WFT Ranking System

The list displays WFT's ranking tiers, with corresponding ranges for each rank. Players gain and lose points based on their performance in official tournaments, ensuring rankings reflect skills and consistency. In special cases, the Points Commission may adjust points to account for unique circumstances, maintaining fairness, and accuracy across the system.

How points are gained and lost

The points ranking system is comprised of two parts - seed points and bonus points.

Seed Points

Seed points are gained or lost depending on your starting seed and your final placement.

For example:

• If you outperform your seed (finish higher than expected), you gain 8 points per every tier higher than your seed.

• If you underperform (finish lower than expected), you lose 8 points per every tier lower than your seed.

Example: If you are 15th seed (falls into 13/16th tier) and you finish 9/12th, you gain 8 points for finishing one tier higher than your starting tier. If you finished 5/6th, you gain 24 points for finishing 3 tiers higher than your starting tier. If you finish in the same seed tier as you started, you don't gain or lose seed points.

Example 2: If you are 2nd seed and place first, you gain 8 points, and if you are 1st seed, you can't gain seed points and can only lose seed points if you don't win.

Seed points were designed to properly rank each player within a division, while bonus points were designed to make deserving top finishing players level up with consistency.

Bonus points

Bonus points are rewarded to the top finishing players in all ranked events. Bonus points are calculated based off a percentage of the total sum of points from all players in the specific event, and distributed amongst the top finishers, with 1st place receiving the most.

Example: Open Double has 120 teams. Anyone placing 9/12th and better receive a portion of the bonus points. In this example we're going to assume every players' rank is 1,000 points. All points from the 120 teams are added up and the total is 120 teams x 2 players x 1,000 points =240,000 total points. The percentage of bonus points in this example will be 1% of the total field, therefore 1% of 240,000 points is 2,400 points awarded to the top finishers with 1st place receiving a higher percentage of the bonus points than 9/12th.

Over time, the Points Committee will adjust the metrics of the points system to reflect accurate rankings for the players, but won't adjust the architecture of the points system for the 2025 Tour. While no points system is perfect for foosball, we are dialing this system in to create a fair and transparent structure for all players, genders, and ranks.

Cap on Ranking Gains

Players will begin the year with their appropriate points and rank. Throughout the year, players cannot rank up until the end of the year, except under the following conditions:

• They win a main event in a higher rank at a major tournament,

• Beginners move up to Rookie mid year as they exempt from this cap, or

• The Points Committee deems a promotion necessary at any time.

Players will accumulate points throughout the year but will be capped at the highest point level within their rank. Once a player reaches this cap, they will remain at that level until the end of the year. At that time, they will be promoted to the next rank. At the start of the following year, their points will be manually adjusted to 100 points above the threshold for the next rank.

Losing Your Rank Mid-Year

Players may naturally lose their rank during the year and may then compete at the level below. However, they will not be capped at the lower rank and can regain their original rank within the same year.

If the Points Committee determines that a player is deliberately manipulating the system—commonly referred to as "sandbagging"—that player will face a one-year suspension, effective immediately following the committee's decision.

Points Update Timeline

Points will be updated at the start of each year by January 1. Additionally, there will be four updates throughout the year, scheduled before each major event:

• Hall of Fame

• Nationals

• The WFT Championships, and

• One final update after the WFT Championships.

This cycle ensures that the points system remains accurate and efficiently monitored year-round.

Possible relegation of your rank

Have you moved up in rank too quickly or been inactive for an extended period of time? You may qualify for relegation to a lower rank under certain conditions.

Examples that may qualify you for relegating to a lower rank:

• Ranked Expert, Pro, or Master but didn't regularly place top 3 or win the rank lower than yours. (Currently we are not allowing players to move down into Rookie or Beginner)

Low or no activity for 5 years.

Recent tournament performance reflects a lower competitive level.

Other case-by-case scenarios determined by the Points Committee.

If you believe your achieved rank should be preserved and wish to ensure it is not lowered, please email wftpoints@gmail.com to request inclusion on the "No Drop" list. Once added, your rank will not fall below the minimum threshold of your current standing. Approval for this request is automatic.

The Points Committee will review each inquiry as a case by case situation and all decisions are final. Even if it appears you meet criteria above, this does not guarantee you will be relegated. All factors such as skill level, legacy, partner selection and anything the points committee deems relevant will be factored into the final decision. Please thoroughly explain your specific situation in the request form to be considered for relegation.

Players that are relegated down may be manually moved back up at anytime based on future performance if deemed appropriate by the Points Committee.
